These are exciting times for the UK as we prepare to leave the EU and take advantage of all the opportunities it brings our country. The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy is at the forefront of this, with a mission to build a stronger, greener future for our nation. I have four key priorities:
Getting businesses ready for Brexit and the opportunities beyond
We must help every UK business get ready for Brexit. We will prepare businesses to take advantage of new trading relationships and markets opened around the world and forge an outward looking, free trading, entrepreneurial and creative UK economy outside the EU.
Leading the world in tackling climate change
We will focus on achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions and ending our contribution to global warming by 2050. We must use the race to cut carbon to drive economic growth, becoming a leader in green technologies and clean energy.
Solving the Grand Challenges facing our society
We will increase productivity and improve lives by tackling our Grand Challenges in life sciences, artificial intelligence, automation and space. The UK will be a science superpower through backing ideas and supporting talent from home and abroad, delivering cutting edge communication technology, helping people live longer and healthier lives, and creating technological advances to make the movement of people, goods and services across the nation greener, safer, easier and more reliable.
Making the UK the best place to work and grow a business
We will create fairer, inclusive, flexible workplaces so everyone has the chance to succeed and balance work and home life. We will unlock enterprise and cut burdens to help businesses grow and reform corporate governance and improve boardroom diversity.
This is truly an historic opportunity and we must all work together to forge the huge opportunities beyond Brexit – to drive jobs, growth, skills and opportunities across the whole of the UK. I look forward to updating you on the exciting work to deliver this mission.
Yours sincerely,
THE RT HON ANDREA LEADSOM MP
Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy
