What a day it turned out to be! As always, I began it on Portland, joining two volunteer watchkeepers at the Coastwatch station overlooking the bill. After a cup of tea, I headed through the constituency, visiting as many polling stations as I could to thank those manning them. I soon learnt the turnout was good, despite the appalling weather. I kept heading east until, at about 1700, I arrived in Swanage, ending my day with another cup of tea in my hand at the Con Club. It was then back to the pub to host our staff Christmas party, which was a most happy evening. We were all nervous as 2200 and the exit poll loomed ever closer. When the expected result was announced, I could not believe it. As I said in yesterday's blog, this election was a choice between light or darkness, and as the evening went on it was clear the electorate had overwhelmingly chosen light. Our count was at Redlands Sports Centre in Weymouth, with W Dorset's count in the neighbouring hall. Our result came through just after 0400. We'd won. I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been elected for a fourth time and I much look forward to serving ALL my constituents, without fear or favour. For the record we achieved 30,024 votes, 58.8 per cent of the vote, leading to a majority of 17,153. This was a team effort, as is always the case, and I am deeply indebted to all those who helped. I am especially touched and grateful to the voters of S Dorset, who have once again put their trust in me. What a huge honour that is.
