An early morning run and into the Commons. A busy morning and and then to Nicholas Soames' office at 1630 to discuss the various points we wanted to raise when we saw Michael Gove at 1700. I had called for this private meeting with the Secretary of State because I and many other colleagues were a little concerned at his direction of travel. Nicholas and I were joined by Richard Benyon and Simon Hart in Michael's office and we had 30 minutes to make our points. The meeting was in confidence, so I cannot relay what was said, but I can say that all matters concerned farming and other rural issues. Then at 1815 I headed to Bellamy's Restaurant in 1 Parliament Street for the finals of the The Tiffin Cup. The competition is held at the House of Commons every year and recognises the best South Asian restaurant in the country. I had nominated the Balti House Indian, from Weymouth, run by the charming owner Shalim Abs. I met up with Shalim almost immediately and we chatted for some time before he introduced me to his head chef Sujon Mia, who was cooking away. There were 12 national finalists, with the top 10 receiving an award. After the judges had spent an hour tasting food from each of these restaurants, their decisions were announced. We came 7th, so not too bad although I think Shalim was a little disappointed. He intends to return next year. During the tasting by the judges, I slipped away to attend a private meeting of the ERG, chaired by Jacob Rees-Mogg. Several Peers joined us and our meeting lasting about an hour.
