Up early and on to my motorcycle for a nice ride to Portland. I headed straight to St John's Church Hall where I met up with Dave Farmer, who is one of the volunteers running the foodbank. He and his team do a wonderful job and I had a chat with one customer, a former soldier who's fallen on hard times. I also met others there, some of whom were learning to use a computer. Geoffrey Tewkesbury, cousin to Mervyn, apparently, also popped in and he showed me some old photographs of his family as children. Considering Geoffrey is 87, you can imagine how dated the pictures looked. I spent a very happy hour or so there, chatting to those who came in and getting the latest information from Dave. I then drove up the hill to Miss Piggys and chomped of a delicious bacon-sandwich sitting outside in the sun. I chatted to several constituents as I did so, all of whom were charming, as islanders always are. Feeling refreshed, I then drove to Radipole Lane to join a special VIP day at the StreetWise Centre, based at the community fire station. The charity does a wonderful job warning both young and old of all the dangers of modern life, including fire and driver safety, and it's testament to the volunteers that a new centre will be opened in Wiltshire shortly. I met many people there, including the Lord Lieutenant, the Deputy Fire Chief, High Sheriff, John Young, and Martyn Underhill, our able P&CC. Running it all was Alison Shelton, the CEO of StreetWise, and without whom the charity would not be as successful as it is. Along with three others, I said a few words, including praising our brave firefighters who were there in force.
