Down to Weymouth on my motorcycle first thing to attend an awards ceremony at the College. We all met in the Hix Restaurant, where the students had prepared some delicious food, accompanied with champagne! The College had won a prestigious Beacon Award for the second time in two years, a remarkable achievement when more than 100 colleges across the country were in the running. This award went to the sports department, recognising the achievements of both lecturers and students. Principal Nigel Evans was there and he must share a lot of the credit. Then to Portland to catch up with the latest news regarding IPACA. I met the interim Principal Gary Spracklen, who's been there for some time and is holding the fort until a full-time Principal is appointed. After a useful briefing in confidence, Gary kindly took me around the Academy where I met the new sponsors Aspiration. They come with a good record and I just hope they can now engender a feeling of optimism at the Academy, which has suffered a number of set-backs over recent years. I have been working very closely with Regional Schools Commissioner Rebecca Clark for some months now and progress is very definitely being made. In the afternoon I joined Cllr Peter Wharf to canvass Moreton. Again we had a most interesting few hours, with plenty of feedback, most of if positive.
