At midday, I headed to Weymouth to honour a long-standing commitment to open the annual Rose Queen Festival at St Edmund's Church off Lanehouse Rocks Road. I had been asked to attend this fabulous event by the two church wardens, Mike Prince, and Meryl James. I took my motorcycle down on a boiling hot day, parked nearby and walked into the attached church hall. I was soon chatting to Mike and Meryl and many others. A huge effort had been made and everything laid out military style. A excellent DJ hosted the event and kept order as various acts entered the ring throughout the afternoon. I was first up at 1300 to crown the new rose queen, which I did. I also crowned two other young girls, known as the queen's attendees. The afternoon got under way with a flourish and everyone was soon enjoying themselves. I chatted to many people, not least the stall holders, thanking them for their contribution. Later in the afternoon I sat down to tea with the rose queen, her mum, and others, and we all tucked into delicious sandwiches and a welcome cup of tea. Behind us an excellent local band entertained us all with some music. It was very happy afternoon and one I thoroughly enjoyed. The church needs every penny it can raise to maintain its buildings and to pay its dues to Salisbury.
