The delayed State Opening of Parliament was held today rather than Monday. The Queen arrived by car rather than carriage and Prince Charles stood in for the Duke, who was in hospital. Security was tight as Far Left activists had promised a 'day of rage'. That turned out to be a damp squib, fortunately, with a few hundred activists shouting the normal abuse. My friend Richard Benyon proposed the Gracious Speech by Her Majesty in fine and humorous style, while Kwasi Kwarteng seconded it in another fine performance. Mr Corbyn opened for Labour and became increasingly shouty as his long speech went on. Mrs May, on the other hand, remained cool and dignified. I returned to my office after the opening speeches to prepare mine for tomorrow.
