I had put in to speak on the Queen's Speech today, but my chance was delayed due to two Statements - the Grenfell Tower fire and terrorism - and Business Questions. I attended the first Statement, where. once again, the PM apologised for the poor reaction, both by local and national government, to the needs of those affected by this appalling tragedy. Her Statement was welcomed on all sides of the House, with many MPs asking whether the cladding used was illegal and failed to meet building standards. Mrs May confirmed we'd have answers to that question within 48 hours. I asked whether the public inquiry would extend its remit if other tower blocks around the country were found to have used illegal cladding. Mrs May said that was a matter for the police and investigations were on-going. This tragedy could have far-reaching consequences, with residents in tower blocks with illegal cladding clamouring to leave their potentially dangerous homes. After Business Questions, the House returned to debating the Queen's Speech and I was called to speak at about 1530. I had six minutes and my speech is on this website. The day ended at 1700 and I headed to Waterloo to catch the train home.
