Back from Brussels last night and up at crack of dawn this morning to get into the Commons to write my weekly column and prepare my contribution to today's Queen's Speech. Two Urgent Questions gave me a little more time to prepare for the latter, which was as well. I was in the Chamber for the opening speeches, to see there were very few Conservative speakers. We were all given 10 minutes to make our contributions and I made the most of mine. The speech is on the website. Socialists love legislation. They think it solves every problem and would impose laws on every aspect of our lives were they able to. This big state, Orwellian approach certainly concerns me, as it leads to bankruptcy and chaos. Anyway, I returned to the Chamber for wind-ups, listened to more angry rhetoric from Labour, and then went to my office to catch up on constituency matters after my two days in Brussels.
