The sun was shining as I headed to Portland on my motorcycle. I had organised to meet Cllr Peter Roper, the former Mayor of the island. We sat outside the Heights Hotel for two hours and discussed many issues. He is a most pleasant man and our chat ranged over many topics. As we left, we looked west and were lost in thought for a moment as we savoured the stunning view and countryside. Then it was up to the YOI, to visit the newly redecorated Jailhouse Diner. There I met the lovely Rachel Barton, who was the inspiration behind this remarkable redevelopment. An old, tired building has been revamped with Lottery money and other donations into a cafe/restaurant, aimed in principle at prisoners' families. It is hoped that some offenders who qualify will be able to work there, too. I met Rachel's Mum, Myrna, who was there with a friend. I was so impressed and sadly cannot make the official opening on 14 June as I will be in parliament. I tucked into a sausage roll while chatting to Rachel, whose optimism and love of life are truly infectious. Back through heavy traffic to the office and plenty of correspondence to deal with.
