Up early and out into a grey and overcast day for my run. Today was the second Queen's Speech, the last being only a few weeks ago. This occasion was more muted, understandably, with the Queen arriving by car rather than carriage. We all gathered in the Chamber by 1130, when Black Rod had the door slammed in her face before being allowed in. Then we all head off to the Lords to listen to the Queen read the speech. What a remarkable lady she is, looking as ever regal and dignified, with the Prince of Wales at her side. The content of the speech is on the website, but it includes some excellent policies which we can now at last pass, not least the EU Withdrawal Bill. It will have its Second Reading tomorrow. The PM wishes to get us out of the EU by 31 January. So say all of us! We came back to the Chamber at 1430 to hear excellent and amusing speeches from two of our Backbenchers. The mood darkened somewhat as Corbyn's undignified rant grated harshly against the mood of the House. The PM then rose and gave an excellent address. The Queen's Speech then carried on for the rest of the day. It's an extraordinary time to be in the Commons.
