Up to London early in the morning, a working lunch and then a meeting with the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Business and Industry, Richard Harrington, and the Group President of a new marine-engineering company, based in Portland. Mr Slawomir Kalicki is a remarkable Polish gentleman who set up this company in his country some years ago. He has now expanded it and I am delighted to say that he has opened a new site in Portland Port. The aim of the meeting was to enable the minister to hear what Intermarine does and for Mr Kalicki to explore possible business opportunities. Clearly the Government does not hand out jobs, but Mr Harrington's officials were extremely helpful and made several suggestions that are now being followed up. Intermarine is exactly the sort of company we need in S Dorset, with good jobs and offering highly skilled work. It's early days, but I hope this meeting will bring forth fruit in the future. I was delighted to help, anyway. Afterwards, I headed down to 9 Downing Street for a supposed meeting with the Chief Whip, who failed to appear. Our group still held the meeting, which was confidential. Then it was back to Committee Room 20 for the weekly meeting of the ERG. Many MPs and Peers attended and Boris Johnson made a guest appearance. Again this meeting was held in confidence. Back home and supper with some very old friends.
