It was Armed Forces' day today and I found myself heading to Swanage to attend two parades, both of them linked. The resort has enjoyed 30 years' association with the Royal Signals at Blandford, their HQs. And to commemorate that remarkable feat, a pair of the Corps' emblems were unveiled on the newly refurbished War Memorial, overlooking the sea. A contingent of the Royal Signals was on parade and we all spent a few moments remembering those who have fallen for our country. We then moved back to the railway station for part two of the day. This was to name a freight train "The Royal Corps of Signals". Two speeches were given by Major General John Crackett, Royal Signals, who also sits on the Army Board, and John Smith, the MD of GB Railfreight, a most interesting man. The class 66 locomotive will travel the length and breadth of the country, so her name will be proudly displayed wherever she goes. In addition, the railway has been given a Queen's Award, which are not easily won, and only a few days ago the first commercial train from the mainline began its new service. The story of this line is quite remarkable and should be told to children through the generations as one of the most remarkable feats, certainly in Dorset's long history. The whole event was very poignant and my thanks go to all the organisers, especially the remarkable Frank Roberts, whose contribution to the town is massive.
