The 48-letter threshold has been reached and the news agenda leads that the vote of confidence in Mrs May will be held tonight between 1800 and 2000, with an announcement at 2100. This move brings with it no pleasure, but there appears to be nothing else we can do to change the PM's mind. She sails blindly on, listening to no one, and promoting her vision of Brexit, which does not deliver at all. The rest of the day almost became a sideshow as colleagues on both sides of the argument talked to an eager press. At 1700, the PM spoke to the '22 Committee, which was packed. There was a fair amount of emotion, but no change of tack. At 1800 MPs began to vote. I headed home briefly, only to return at 2045 to help colleagues deal with the Press. At 2100 the result was announced. The PM won 200 to 117. However, when you consider that about 150 MPs are on the payroll, the 117 is a significant number and many more than the Government has predicted. I and other colleagues then responded to various news requests before heading home. There are no winners here, of course. The PM's authority has taken another blow and we, who are trying to honour the EU referendum result, face further frustration as we battle to deliver. What a mess!
