A early start to what was a busy day. Up to London midday and into the Chamber for Defence Questions by 1430. I picked up on a question about the size of our Royal Navy, which I think is lamentably small. However, that's not the Government's fault as Labour during its 13 years in office had left a gaping hole in the Defence budget. But with so many threats around the world, not least from Russia and China, we need a strong maritime capability, not least to support our NATO allies in the event of conflict or to deter one. The minister assured me that the navy was expanding and more ships were being built. Let's hope this momentum continues. Straight afterwards the PM came to the Chamber to tell us all about the current situation on EU negotiations. Of course this follows on from her good speech last Friday, which is already on my website. I was called again and this time I concentrated on who exactly would be in control of our fishing waters when we've left the EU. I'd heard rumours that fishing might used as a negotiating tool to get a better deal in another area, and that is unacceptable to me. Back in control of our waters, we can rebuild our much diminished fishing fleet and industry. Meanwhile, the European Scrutiny Committee, which I am a member of, was taking oral evidence from the Chancellor, Philip Hammond. I had wanted to be there but was speaking in the Data Protection Bill debate. It is regrettable that the Lords strapped on two amendments to this Bill that would, in my view, undermine a free press, and I and others said so. My speech is on my website. It is sad that Members of both Houses want to muzzle the press through either fear, anger, revenge or guilt. Fortunately, the Government agreed and there are no plans now to impede the press with more state legislation or control. And let's not forget that phone hacking is already a criminal offence. The PM did well during a very long ordeal. The debate went through to 2200, so I missed the reception held by Dr Liam Fox, which I wanted to attend. He's pushing ahead with trade deals post EU and the feedback from countries across the world is most promising. There were no votes at the end of the day and I finally heading home at about 2215.
