Another intriguing day, ending with one of the leadership contenders being voted out. After a busy morning working on constituency matters, I went out for lunch - a very rare treat - with a few colleagues. It's normally a sandwich! At 1500 we all piled into CR 14 to vote. I have made no secret of the fact I am backing Boris and voted accordingly. Then at 1630 I attended another weekly meeting with more colleagues, which was held in private. As you might imagine, there was a fair bit to discuss. With Parliament tied up with the leadership race, there's not a lot of Government business going on. At 1800, the 1922 Committee announced the result of the ballot, which was as follows: Michael Gove, 41; Jeremy Hunt, 46; Sajid Javid, 33; Rory Stewart, 37; Boris Johnson, 126; and Dominic Raab, 30. Dominic did not secure enough votes to through, so his bid ended. The remaining five went on to the live television debate at 2000, which I watched. I always knew it was going to be messy, and so it proved. No one came out the overall winner, although Rory ruffled feathers by trying to distance himself from the other four. We will know more tomorrow when there's another ballot, before the final two on Thursday. Frankly, the sooner this is over, the better. We have a country to run, the EU to leave, and a mass of national issues that need our attention.
