It was a great honour to attend the launch of the newly-funded Centre of Excellence for motor vehicles at Weymouth College. As a friend and supporter of the college, I listened to four excellent addresses from the Principal, Nigel Evans, Ian Girling, from the Dorset LEP and Chamber of Commerce, Matt Prosser, the CEO of our new unitary authority, and Brian Oman, Head of School, Engineering. Businesses and students also attended, enjoying a light breakfast before the speeches began. The launch was to mark funding of £250,000 from the LEP, which has enabled the College to invest in its facility and vehicles. After the speeches, we all walked down to the Centre to meet and chat with students, all of whom were over the moon at the investment and the improvement of their training facilities. I was struck by how confident the students were and all are looking to take on an apprenticeship and move into full employment in their chosen profession. A huge amount of credit must go to Brian Oman, who is passionate about his role and determined to see the best for his young charges. The exciting news, too, is that there is more money coming, this time for a centre of excellence for engineering. All good news for the college. Afterwards, it was out and about meeting voters.
