Appalling news today that a police custody sergeant was shot dead by a man who had been arrested and was handcuffed. The Prime Minister, Home Secretary and Met Police Commissioner paid tribute to Sergeant Matt Ratana. What a tragedy. Today, I headed to Weymouth on my motorcycle to meet John Cornish, who has been the Principal at All Saints for just over a year. The school has had its ups and downs in recent years and is now part of an academy. John very kindly gave me more than an hour of his time and we chatted in private before he took me on a whistle-stop tour. I met the headboy and headgirl and some students and a photo was taken outside. Built in the 1950, the school needs a lot of reinvestment and John is doing all he can within this academy status to get some funding. We're looking to see if there's anything I can do to help. I felt the school was in excellent hands and wish John and his team well for the future. Then it was across the causeway to the National Sailing Academy to catch up with CEO Peter Allam, who does an outstanding job. The pandemic and all the restrictions associated with it have hit sailing hard, and the Academy is no exception. We chatted in private over a sandwich, before we had to leave our room for a small wedding. Wherever I go, I see harm, desperation and sadness as businesses et al struggle to cope and I can only repeat that a major rethink over the way we fight this virus must happen. Talking of which, a quarter of the UK's population is now under tighter coronavirus restrictions after measures were announced for Cardiff, Leeds and Blackpool, while students have been left angered by restrictions in Scotland as well as across England and Wales. What are we doing? And the Chancellor’s Job Support Scheme was criticised for not going far enough to prevent rises in unemployment. The boss of the clothing store Next has warned that thousands of retail jobs could become unviable, because the coronavirus pandemic may lead to a permanent shift to online shopping. This follows warnings from the Resolution Foundation that the new scheme will slow but not stop "major" job losses. If we all just got on with our lives these unaffordable rescue packages would not be needed. The debt and debt interest continue to rise and some day we're going to have to pay it back, but at what cost?
