Chancellor Rishi Sunak returned to the Chamber today, saying it was "impossible" to predict how many jobs the government's new wage subsidy scheme would save. The scheme, set to replace furlough, will see the government top up the pay of people unable to work full time. It aims to stop mass job cuts after the government introduced another round of restrictions to combat the virus. While this was going on in London, I was in Corsham with the Defence Select Committee on a visit to Airbus and the MOD cyber HQs just down the road. I have to be slightly careful what I say as we saw and heard a lot of sensitive stuff, all of which was fascinating. I can say that Airbus has been delivering Skynet, which is a reliable and resilient military satcom capability, for over 15 years. A new generation of military satellite is being worked on. At MOD Corsham, we entered the control room where all this cyber work is done. You do need to be a rocket scientist to understand all of it, but I got the gist. It was a most interesting day.
