Not much shocks and angers me; I've been around the block long enough not to be. But the letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel from Labour MP Naz Shah, and signed by 30 of her colleagues, is simply shameful, spiteful and classic Left-wing rhetoric and hypocrisy. I saw Priti make her Statement in the Chamber following last weekend's riots and she responded brilliantly to a question from a Labour MP which was laced with cynicism about racism. Priti simply explained how she too had experienced it. The letter, however, condemns her for daring to use her experience to answer the question. I despair. What on earth is happening to our beloved country. And now they are boarding-up statues of Winston Churchill and the Cenotaph in preparation for more protests this weekend. I say let them stand and anyone who attempts to deface them is immediately arrested and charged. This anarchy is simply unacceptable and, despite the ranting of a minority, I know that the silent majority agree. First up this morning was the weekly conference call with Dorset Council and fellow Dorset MPs. Much was discussed during the hour, not least future funding, which is going to be critical. Later in the day, I took part in a conference call with local government minister Robert Jenrick. It gave me the chance to lobby hard on behalf of the council for more money, and to ask whether there'd be any more funds for those in desperate straits after this pandemic. My final conference was with our small group of like-minded colleagues, a chance for us all to let off steam in total confidence. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said that he believes the economy will "bounce back" after news that it had shrunk by more than a fifth for the first full month of the coronavirus lockdown. The Office for National Statistics said economic activity dropped by 20.4 per cent in April - the largest drop in a single month since records began in 1997. We also learnt that people who use public transport could be fined up to £100 if they do not wear a face covering from Monday. I am not sure who is going to police that.
