Up a little earlier than normal for my trot around the park because I wanted to be in Westminter Hall at 0930 for Iain Duncan-Smith's 90 minute debate on Huawei. Iain and a growing number of Conservative MPs are extremely concerned about the Government's rush to sign up to this Chinese company, which, in effect, is an apparatus of the state. Of course 5G is important, but NOT to the detriment of our security. We've also upset our allies. The US, Australia and Japan are furious we've given the go ahead, saying it's a huge risk. There were several MPs in the Hall and about 11 of them spoke, most against Huawei. I intervened twice on Iain, whose excellent and thought-provoking speech is on the website. From there I did a short stint in the office before entering the Chamber just before the start of PMQs. Corbyn, true to form, went for the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, who sat beside the Prime Minister, exuding confidence. Mr Johnson supported her, as do we all. At 1530 I met three representatives from Landmarc, who run all the defence training areas, like Bovington and Lulworth in my constituency. In short, their contract runs out in two years' time and they were lobbying me to see if I could shed any light on the Government's future plans. I suspect the MOD is looking at all its costs, not least with a review hanging over them, and therefore all contracts are up for grabs. I'm guessing, but I suspect that is the case. I had several other meetings and was delighted to read the Dorset has received all the monies if bid for to arm more police officers with tasers. Dorset Police received almost £260,000 for 315 tasers. This is good news, as the police need to be able to defend themselves, or others, using reasonable force. Clearly, those who use tasers will be well trained and only use it as a last resort.
