Today was hospital day. First stop was the top-notch Linden Unit in Weymouth. The 15 bed unit caters for those with mental health issues and is highly regarded. I had a most useful brief from Mike Kelly, the Head of Mental Health, Kath Florey-Saunders, Head of Business Delivery, and Sarah Suart, the Ward Manager. Our one hour chat was in confidence, but I was reassured by what I heard. The Linden Unit is due to shut in about 2-3 years' time, with 4 beds moving to the Forston Unit at DCH. This unit will have more beds and be ably supported by other departments within the hospital. After our chat Sarah showed me around the Linden Unit, which she is rightly very proud of. Then it was on to Weymouth Hospital to meet Tess Drabble, the Urgent Care Team Lead, and Helen Persey, the Locality Manager. I met many of the staff there and was so impressed by the quiet efficiency of the place. The standard of care is the highest anyone could possible expect and clearly they are doing a wonderful job. We are most fortunate to have these two facilities and their dedicated staff. Finally, it was off to Portland Port to meet CEO Bill Reeves, along with my colleague and friend Sir Oliver Letwin. We were there to discuss a western relief road, which we all believe is necessary if we are to attract more jobs and prosperity and deal with the growing problem of congestion. An interesting day.
