Into the office first thing, before heading to Weymouth to meet one of our prison officers and his wife. The PO concerned is recovering from a very serious assault at HMP Bedford, where he was on detached duty. He was knocked unconscious before the prisoner began stamping on his head. Another PO came to the rescue but not before serious damage had been done. His wife showed me the pictures and the full extent of his injuries were horrific. This attack on POs continues to really worry me. I believe that the sharply defined white line that used to exist between PO and prisoner has dimmed over recent years. Prisoners are getting away with far too much and there are insufficient deterrents. I shall continue to make this point and others as the POs do a remarkable job, out of sight and sound unless of course something goes wrong. A more charming couple would be hard to find. He is making a full recovery, thankfully, and his sweet wife is providing all the support he needs to get him back to work. With a final interview for a new member of staff at home, I headed back, after which I returned to the house to prepare for a visit by Home Secretary Amber Rudd. She had come to address a fundraiser, which was immensely kind of her. It was a fun evening, with Amber speaking most eloquently. She held the audience, who were very keen to ask questions. After it was all over, my wife and I enjoyed a quiet chat with her. Amber is a bright and very able minister, who came to the House the same time as me. We made the most of this private moment, as we never have enough time to talk to each other in the House. A fun evening.
