The local paper published a remarkable good news story today, which highlighted the best in people. A German navy student pilot was using the sports facilities at Atlantic House on Portland when he noticed a man desperately trying to rescue his son who was trapped underwater in the pool there. Both men tried to pull the boy from the pool's pump, but couldn't. The pilot, Lieutenant Johannes Rolle, who is training to be a search and rescue pilot, then had the quickness of thought to turn off the pump and raise the alarm. When he returned, the boy was free but had no pulse and was not breathing. The Lieutenant did not hesitate and, after rolling the boy on to his back, conducted CPR. The boy was resuscitated and was soon on his way to hospital, where he spent five days. He has fully recovered. There is no doubt that the pilot's quick thinking and training saved the boy's life. I do hope Johannes's actions are properly recognised.
