Freedom Day, or was it? The NHS app is causing total chaos as hundreds of thousands of people have to isolate after being 'pinged'. It's important to note that these are healthy people! The PM threw a grenade into the debate by saying that those attending nightclubs would have to be fully vaccinated. This would apply from the end of September. This after Government ministers have repeatedly said they would not do this. Latest figures show 35 per cent of 18 to 30-year-olds have not had their first jab. Currently nightclubs and other crowded venues are only encouraged to ask clubbers to show proof of vaccination, a negative test result or immunity. But Boris Johnson said he was concerned by the continuing risk of transmission. The announcement came on the day nightclubs in England were allowed to reopen after 16 months of closure. Mr Johnson told a press conference: "I don't want to have to close nightclubs again as they have elsewhere. But it does mean nightclubs need to do the socially responsible thing." The jab will now be offered to children over 12, who are at higher risk of getting ill if they catch Covid. But the vast majority of children in the UK, who are low risk, will not be offered the vaccine for now. However, some healthy children over 12, who live with other vulnerable people, can have the vaccine, as well as those on the cusp of turning 18. It means, overall, around 370,000 children will be eligible. The UK is in marked contrast with other countries - such as the US and Canada - which have mass vaccinated children aged 12 to 17. Vaccinating children is controversial and I suspect there will be resistance to this. First up today was a virtual meeting with a minister from the Lords to talk about the M4 corridor and suggested improvements off it. Several MPs attended and it was useful session as we listed our wants and issues. Next up was fascinating public session of our Defence Select Committee with Lord Frost. As always, he was extremely confident and what a breath of fresh air! At 1700, we held a private virtual meeting of the Northern Ireland Veteran's Group of MPs, to further discuss this appalling, ongoing witch-hunt of our NI veterans. Finally, the sun has come out and we enjoyed another summer's day. Hope it lasts.
