Our fourth Apprenticeship Fair at Weymouth College was the best yet. Many, many thanks to Principal Nigel Evans and his team. The College has now supported nearly 500 apprentices into work, a wonderful achievement and much more to work for. The morning began early with a breakfast for business leaders at 0730. It was well attended and the students in the restaurant did a fantastic job feeding us all with egg and bacon and plenty of coffee. I had been asked to speak for a few moments, which I duly did, expanding on the Government's future plans for apprentices. At about 1000 I heard that our guest speaker had arrived. I met Tim Martin, Founder Chairman of Wetherspoons, during the EU referendum, where he was an ardent Brexiteer. He kindly came to speak at a rally I helped organise in the Pavilion. I knew he would give an excellent address and he duly delivered. He aimed his talk at just the right level, encouraging all the attendees that they could achieve whatever they wanted to achieve with hard graft and determination. Tim then kindly handed out the nine apprenticeship certificates before handing over to me to present the overall apprentice of the year. I was over the moon to present the prize to Jessica Burgoyne, who teaches at Bincombe Primary School. What a lovely lady and she was clearly very surprised to have won. The report from her employer was most impressive, saying she was cheerful, selfless and hard working. The whole event was a great success and again my thanks go to Nigel and his team, who worked so hard to put it on.
