Inevitably, the anti-racism protests descended into violence in Bristol and London as anarchists resorted to what only they know - thuggery. I have no truck with peaceful protests and we all have a right to participate in them on issues we feel strongly about and, make no mistake, the killing of George Floyd in the US was appalling. Having said that, other protests passed off peacefully, including one in Weymouth, which was a relief, I'm sure, for the police. In London, the police issued a dispersal order for the City of Westminster compelling people to leave the area after skirmishes. Boris Johnson tweeted that the protests had been "subverted by thuggery". I concur. With new plans in place to prevent the mass invasion of visitors at Durdle Door and Lulworth Cover experienced over the Bank Holiday weekend, the past two days have been far quieter. The colder weather helped. I spoke to the landowner and police for an update on both visitor numbers and the protest in Weymouth and everything was under control, thankfully. The latest update on the virus is encouraging, with the lowest daily increase in deaths (77) since the lock-down began. Of course, every death is a tragedy, but the figure is at last coming down, bringing hope to us all that we can begin to get on with our lives.
