The predictions came true, of course, and our Party received a massive drubbing in the European elections. Politically, those Parties which want to leave the EU and those who wish to remain in it did best. Again, no surprise there. To me the message is clear. We need to leave the EU, without a deal if necessary. We cannot move on until this has been accomplished and even the most ardent Remainer in our Party must surely realise that now. Contenders for the top job are beginning to emerge, with Boris Johnson as the favourite. It must be a Brexiteer next time, of that there is no doubt. I will of course listen to what they all have to say, but anyone who is not 100 per cent committed to leaving the EU at the end of October will not get my vote. What an extraordinary period in our island history. At 0930 I hopped on to my motorbike and headed to the American memorial in Weymouth to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D Day landings in Normandy. The brief and poignant Service began at 1100, with the standard bearers doing a wonderful job as always. Afterwards, we all went into the hotel opposite the Memorial for coffee and a chat. The rain held off.
