I had the most pleasurable task of chairing a debating session, held at the Officers' Mess, Bovington, for young Troop Leaders, who are going through the next stage of their training post Sandhurst. There were three debates on three different motions. Each motion had three officers proposing and three opposing. The first motion was: This house believes that cyber threat is currently the greatest risk to UK security. The second: This house believes that, in the contemporary operating environment, it is about the equipment, not the man. And the third: This house believes that the enduring forward presence is little more than aggressive posturing, increasing friction in Eastern Europe rather than providing genuine support. These debates were all part of the officers' training and was aimed at breeding self confidence and improve their ability to speak clearly and simply. After two interesting sessions, we had a short break and I was armed with a gin and tonic! The commanding officer, Colonel Matt Wilkinson, runs the Training Regiment at Bovington and he was most welcoming, adding his own observations at the end of each session. We ran through to 2000, when I was presented with a framed regimental badge before heading home.
