Out into the park for my early morning run. Into the Commons, grabbed a coffee and headed to CR6 for the next session of our Defence Committee. The first 30 minutes were in private and then we took evidence from Lieutenant General (Retd) Richard Nugee CB CVO CBE, who was commissioned into the British Army in 1986. He completed operational tours of Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Cyprus, and Afghanistan. He also specialised in personnel (HR) roles culminating in Chief of Defence People (equivalent to Global HR Director for Defence). He spent his final year writing a Review of Defence's approach to Climate Change and Sustainability, and is now the Non-Executive Director for Climate Change and Net Zero in the Ministry of Defence. As you might imagine, that was the topic for today's session. It was a fascinating one and can be seen on Parliament TV. Much to get on with in the afternoon, while the debate on the Autumn Statement went on for a second day in the Chamber. Votes came at about 1900 and I and several other Conservative MPs abstained. I could not vote for tax rises at a time like this.
