Diary - bitterly cold day

Monday, 23 January, 2023

A bitterly cold morning. Up to London for another week as the row over Nadhim Zahawi's tax affairs continued. The Prime Minister asked his independent ethics' adviser to look into the disclosures made about Mr Zahawi. And another investigation will look at the appointment of the BBC chairman, following reports he helped Boris Johnson secure a loan, which he denied. At 1525, I entered the Chamber to attend a UQ sought by Angela Rayner on Mr Zahawi's affairs. As the allegations against both Mr Zahawi and and the former PM were being investigated, I saw little point in this UQ as no one knows all the facts and, personally, I believe someone to be innocent until proven guilty. The NI Budget Bill took up most of the afternoon but the debated faded at about 1900 and we dropped to one-line. I had a lot of correspondence to deal with and ploughed through it all as I do try and reply to constituents in reasonable time. Meanwhile, the strikes affecting the NHS continued, with a boss claiming the standoff was turning into a “war of attrition” and if industrial action continued the NHS would not be able to recover. And, sadly, a firefighter was critically injured in a blaze at the Jenners building in Edinburgh.

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Lancashire mother Nicola Bulley deepened, as the police investigating the case believe she fell into a river. It does seem a little far-fetched and surely her body would have been found by now were that the case.
