It being my birthday, I could think of no way better to celebrate it than spend the day in the Commons battling for Brexit! And what a day it turned out to be. The day began with an early breakfast with my wife, which fortified me well for what was to come. The debate around seven different amendments began later than expected due to a Ministerial Statement about HMRC. Nearly all the amendments were aimed at delaying or frustrating Brexit and it was hoped they would be defeated. It is extraordinary to nearly all of us in the Conservative Party why a minority of our own MPs go to such lengths to defeat their own Government on this issue. I witnessed first hand one Conservative Remainer whose behaviour bordered on bullying as this MP attempted to get colleagues to vote for the damaging amendments. The good news is that two worrisome amendments, by Labour's Yvette Cooper and Conservative's Dominic Grieve, were voted down and the Government-backed amendment lodged by Sir Graham Brady got through. I hope that the constituents of those who continue to try and stop Brexit will let their MP know that this is not the honourable way to behave. Two private meetings preceded the votes and they were both in confidence. I can say however that there appeared to be a coming together of the more moderate Remainers and those of us trying to honour the referendum result.
