Our fifth Apprenticeship Fair at Weymouth College today and the conclusion of a busy and innovative week in which the College managed to sell the apprentice message via a number of initiatives. It was an impressive effort by Principal Nigel Evans and his team. I rose at 0600 and was in the car heading to the College an hour later. Breakfast with business leaders was the first item on the agenda, which the College hosted in the Hix Restaurant. The young team did a great job in feeding a lot of us, before we listened to a number of speeches. I made a short one myself. There was then an hour's break before we reconvened, this time with apprentices, their assessors, one or two employers and lecturers. Again, I gave a short address before we handed out certificates to the winners and the highly commended. They were an impressive team and represented a wide range of activities. Young Adam won the Apprentice of the Year. He wants to be a bricklayer and had come through his course despite some personal ups and downs that he had dealt with in a most courageous and determined way. I thoroughly enjoy this interaction with the young and how rewarding it must be for the College and all those involved in their development to see them succeed. An inspirational morning. And my deep gratitude goes to all at the College that helped make today happen.
