YET again, diehard Remainers are attempting to overturn the biggest single vote in this nation’s history. MPs Anna Soubry and Chuka Umunna, in particular, are spearheading a new, cross-Party campaign to put Mrs May’s final Brexit agreement to the people - again. Faced with polls showing that another referendum is entirely unwelcome to 65 per cent of the country, they have renamed it, The People’s Vote. It is, of course, nothing of the sort. The people have already voted – in June 2016 - and now, most of them wish we would just get on with the task in hand.
Ms Soubry and Mr Umunna may have been emboldened by the knowledge that this week’s business in the House of Lords promises to be difficult for the EU Withdrawal Bill, with a number of amendments likely to dilute the Government’s plans. The duo insist they are simply trying to avoid a disastrous decision for the country, despite ample evidence already showing that Project Fear was completely misplaced.
The threatened immediate recession and hike in unemployment failed to come about, and all predictions now are for continued economic growth for the UK. Even the head of Goldman Sacks now says his firm is staying to enjoy the coming boom. The truth is, of course, this is yet another attempt to stop Brexit.
Amusingly, Ms Soubry and Mr Umunna say they are upset with my friend and colleague Jacob Rees-Mogg for comparing their ilk to the WWII Japanese soldier who refused to surrender until 1974. To me, it seems a remarkably apt comparison.
