I do appreciate that George Osborne has a very difficult job managing our economy during tough times. That said, I am very concerned that the defence budget, already down to the last bow and arrow, is to be further reduced by another £750 million. I have said consistently that defence spending must rise, with other pet projects like overseas aid stopped. Only yesterday, while lunching with a Commodore, we discussed the vulnerable position the Royal Navy was in. Senior officers want at least 30 frigates and destroyers to meet all their commitments, while we have only 19. Even when I was serving during the Falklands War, we had about 60. We cannot and must not compromise on the defence of our country. I shall continue to call on the Government to rethink the SDSR before it really is too late and once again politicians face the wrath of an unforgiving nation.
