In today's press, the German foreign minister claims that those wishing to withdraw from the EU could be putting peace in Europe at risk. Frank-Walter Steinmeier added that it was was this sort of "nationalism" which caused the First World War. I have to disagree. And to compare the situation then to the one we have today is disingenuous, to say the least. You only have to look at Italy, Greece, Spain, France and Portugal to see the effect 'ever closer union' is having on member states, especially those with the euro. It's a fool's paradise, and the truth is Germany has invested so many multi-billions of euros in this mad experiment that they cannot get out. And if countries do adopt their own currencies again, which they should, Germany would be severely damaged economically, beached like a whale, with a currency that no one can afford to trade with. Germany's wish to be the power house of Europe will destroy Federalism ultimately, that is the irony, and the foreign minister knows it. Dire warnings of the kind Mr Steinmeier has been uttering are the behaviour of the desperate.
