An early morning run and into the Commons. After morning routine, entered the Chamber at1130 for Treasury Questions. The new Chancellor, Philip Hammond, was in his place where his particular skills and experience will be much needed. I tried to get in on the question about business rates as the Government has said that local authorities can retain 100 per cent of them but that is not strictly the case. Anyway, I failed to catch the Speaker's eye, so I stayed on for the next event which was a statement on Turkey by the newly appointed minister Sir Alan Duncan. The Opposition made much about Boris Johnson's absence, but the poor man was up to his ears with meetings with foreign officials. Sir Alan did a good job and I managed to catch the Speaker's eye. I asked for some reassurance that all those rounded up would not be tortured. Sir Alan, who was due to visit Turkey tomorrow, said he would ensure these concerns were made to the Turkish government. A late sandwich lunch at my desk and then work through until we all headed to No 10 for a reception. Theresa May spoke briefly to us all while we enjoyed the odd drink or two. And then back to the House for a vote at 1900. After which I enjoyed supper with my son.
