An early morning run got me back into my old routine, before a quick coffee at a nearby cafe and then into the Commons. First trick is to get back into your old office and log on to your computer. Success on both counts, much to my surprise. A large amount of congratulatory emails greeted me, which I found very touching. I began to reply to them all but with the time approaching 1100 I dropped down a floor for the first meeting of the '22 Backbench Committee. As you can imagine, it was packed with MPs and members of the other place. And of course there were the new MPs - more than 70 of them. The meeting was in confidence, but I can tell you that the PM received a rapturous applause and rightly so. With morale sky-high, we left an hour later all pumped up and ready to face the many challenges that lie ahead. I spent the rest of the afternoon working on emails and casework, which is already piling in. An extraordinary day.
