Out into the park first thing for the morning constitution and then into the Commons. The first couple of hours in the office working on parliamentary and casework matters. Then, down to meet membersĀ of the Weymouth Chamber of Trade, led by the lovely Julie Cleaver. They are such a nice lot of people and were clearly enjoying their tour of the Palace of Westminster. I sadly only had 15 minutes with them all as I had to attend a presentation by Dorset Fire Chief Darran Gunter at 1230. Anyway, we made the most of our time together, culminating in a group photograph. They then went their way and I headed to a meeting room outside Portcullis House to meet the Chief. He'd started his brief by the time I arrived and, as always, it was well packaged and presented. He and the Wilts Fire Chief, the charming Simon , were briefing members on the planned amalgamation of Dorset and Wilts fire service, to cut costs and save frontline services. This has been in the wind for some time and Darran has been very progressive in dealing with the hard choices he and his force faces. From what we heard, the merge is moving ever closer and will happen. Government is looking at it with the future in mind, obviously. I am indebted to the Service and all those who serve in it. Dorset's firefighters are a professional and dedicated team of men and women, who we are all very proud of. Back to my desk for a late working sandwich and a chance to plough on through a mass of work. Home at 2000 and dinner with my wife. A lovely end to the day.
