Post carnival, I had many letters to write and things to follow up on. This always happens when I go out as constituents bring up concerns and issues when they meet me. Followed up on my letter to Lord Digby Jones, asking him back to next year's Apprenticeship Fair at Weymouth College. He's a busy man and I very much we can persuade him to return. His inspirational address this year was one of the best I've ever heard. The beheading of American journalist James Foley has shocked everyone. It's believed his killer was British, which makes the whole thing even more appalling. It's estimated that many hundreds of British Muslims are out in Syria and Iraq fighting for Islamic State, a new and extreme Islamic organisation, hellbent on causing chaos and terror. The Government is being called to do more to prevent these people from leaving the country in the first place and I agree that anything practical that can be done should be. As I have said in a recent column, I believe we should be discussing this whole issue in Parliament; everyone else is! Very worrying times. The irony now is that commentators are suggesting we should side with Assad to rid ourselves of this extremist group. I don't know all the facts, but it's certainly true that the whole area was more settled under Saddam Hussein and Assad, despite their appalling record.
