Another sunny day. After a morning in the office, I headed to Westham for another walkabout. This time I relied on the generous hospitality of the golf club to leave my motorcycle gear. The secretary could not have been kinder. Again, a most interesting afternoon. One gentleman I met told me how he'd set up his own car-cleaning business after being laid off. I caught up with him washing down his car, which was clearly his love and joy. While we chatted, he told me how he'd come off drugs, having taken them first in prison! I was most taken by this young man and his family. He had been to hell and back and was now determined to make his way in life. I wished him all the best and walked on. Later on, I met another gentleman, who ushered me conspiratorially into his garage. Wondering what awaited me, I was delighted to find it was a most impressive and extensive model railway collection. There were trains heading in all directions and apparently more in the man's loft! He admitted it was the child in him and I concurred. There's something fascinating about railways and when I told him I'd been allowed to drive a steam locomotive in Swanage he turned green with envy. The last gentleman I met on my walkabout, I knew from before. He'd come to one of my surgeries. He was charming and for once I did remember meeting him! I meet so many people it's difficult to remember everyone. He told me that he'd nearly written to the local newspaper after reading one particularly unpleasant letter about me. I told him that as a politician we all faced flak from one direction or another. It comes with the territory. As the afternoon wore on, I headed home and to the waiting in-tray.
